It's not clear if Gems are the only currency in the game. Gems can be obtained in various ways, including completing Story Mode missions (example: completing a certain mission can give you up to 50 gems).
Gems are an in-game currency used in the shop to buy card packs and accesories. Players can use a cursor to navigate and display the details of their cards, or use shortcut buttons on their controller instead. In this mode you need to complete missions including Scenarios (short illustrated reading segments that tell the story), Practice rounds (tutorial-like segments in which the player can practice a duel with a pre-build deck based on the theme and learn how the cards work) and actual Duels (duels with pre-build deck but no tutorial popups). There's a single player offline "Story Mode" that will have players experience the storylines of various card themes.
This could mean somewhere between januari-march 2022. Release date is confirmed for Winter 2021. During KONAMI's livestream at TGS 2021 earlier today, the company showed some new footage and shared new details from the upcoming free-to-play simulator Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel.
